Glossary

Anesthesia
The goal of anesthesia is to render the patient insensible to pain or other stimuli while maintaining vital functions like heart rate, blood pressure and respiration within safe limits. All anesthetics will negatively affect some or all of these critical functions to some degree. The goal is to use an agent or combination of agents to minimize the negative effects.
Electrocardiography
Electrocardiography displays the electrical activity of the heart as a graph. Disturbances in rhythm and conduction can be detected and treated using this device.
Laser Surgery
Laser surgery utilizes laser energy to rapidly and precisely vaporize tissue. Different lasers work for different applications. A carbon dioxide laser is useful for soft tissues such as skin, muscle, fat, and internal organs.
Pulse Oximetry
Pulse Oximetry measures the oxygen content of red blood cells. It reflects how well the patient is breathing and circulating oxygen through the body.
Vaccination
A vaccination is the administration of weakened or altered disease causing agents to build up immunity to that agent without causing the actual disease.
Ultrasound Imaging
Ultrasound Imaging uses very high frequency sounds to generate cross-section images of internal organs. This can be useful for examining patients with heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, tumors, and a host of other conditions.
X-Ray Imaging
X-Ray Imaging (also called radiography) uses x-ray energy to generate images of internal body structures. X-rays can be used to examine bones for fractures, tumors, and other diseases, as well internal organs for changes in size, shape and position. Also, the house key that your Labrador Retriever just swallowed will show up quite nicely.
